The Lockheed L-188 Electra II
For Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002
Professional & Flight Simulator 2004:
Fly the Electra! -
As featured in PC Pilot # 35 - Summer 2005
Our Lockheed L-188 Electra model gives you the opportunity to
fly a true classic. As in real life, this Electra can lift impressive loads
out of the Alaskan wilderness, or make high speed runs cross-country into
airfields too small for larger jets. And the rugged Electra can operate in
almost any weather.
The aircraft featured here is painted in the colors of Zantop,
a carrier which operated Electra's well into the 90's. You can find a wide
variety of additional liveries at
www.avsim.com,
www.flightsim.com & www.calclassic.com. Of particular interest
are the outstanding photo-realistic paint jobs created by Bill Schulz. Make
sure to check them out. A version of this Electra can also be found on the
CD-ROM distribution disc of PC Pilot #35.
All aspects of this freeware Electra including the 3D model,
panel, textures and flight model were created in-house by the AVIATIONBUFF.
At last count, there have been more than 15,000 downloads of the Electra
from popular simulation websites.
System Requirements:
This L-188 Model is designed for use with Microsoft Flight
Simulator 2002 Pro & Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 Century Of Flight. The
model is frame rate friendly and should work well if FS2002 Pro or FS2004
perform well on your system. Recommended monitor resolution is 1024x768 or
higher with 1280x1024 being the optimal setting.
The Lockheed L-188 Electra II four engine turboprop was first
flown in 1957. The L-188 had a relatively short production run due to a
combination of early structural issues which were later resolved, and the rapid development of the jet
airliner. A total of 170 Electra's were produced. While
success as a passenger airliner was limited, the aircraft saw extensive service as a
all-weather air cargo carrier flying into smaller or difficult to
reach airfields. The Electra was known for its impressive cargo capabilities
as well as its high cruising speed.
The L-188 Electra story does not end there however, the
Electra became the base platform for the development of the highly
successful P-3 Orion series of military maritime aircraft. The P-3 continues to be
the primary anti-submarine platform for many nations around the world.

Designers notes:
I am also fascinated
with computer flight simulations. In early 2001 I created a series
of flyable aircraft for use with Austin Meyers' X-Plane flight
simulator. These were great fun to design and fly and I decided to
share the aircraft with others through AVSIM.com and Flightsim.com.
My Lockheed P-3 Orion and Piper Tomahawk for X-Plane received Best
Picks mention in PC-Pilot magazine.
In 2003 I created a
flyable freeware Lockheed L-188 Electra. This Electra has been
downloaded by tens of thousands of Flight Simulator users.
Additional liveries have been created by dozens of flightsim
community developers and can be found at the popular flight
simulator enthusiast sites avsim.com and flightsim.com.
