2008 North Georgia Transportation
Expo story and photography Chris Buff
The 2008 North Georgia
Transportation Expo took place on Sept 13th and 14th at the
Richard B. Russell Airport near Rome, Georgia.
The weather cooperated with an
almost perfect day for an air show with partly cloudy skies and
warm temperatures. This event really is a Transportation Expo
with a not only an air show, but a car show as well. I must say
that the promoters went the extra mile to make sure that the
performers, media and paying guests had a fun and rewarding
weekend. First rate narration was provided by Hugh Oldham. The
show included a wide variety of static displays ranging from a
classic DC -3 to a US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet piloted by Lt.
Liz Tremel.
The Screaming Eagles Parachute
Team marked the opening of the flying activity. Warbird fans
were treated to fine examples of World War II era aircraft in
flight including a B-25 Mitchell “Killer Bee” and A-26 Invader
“Spirit of North Carolina” as well as a C-45 Expediter and DC-3.
In addition, Bob Ford flew a graceful performance in his T-6
Texan “Paradise”.
Show guests were entertained by
thrilling flying from Jackie B and Kent Gordon along with
formation work by the Red Thunder and Tiger Flight teams. The
U.S. Air Force also provided a flyby with their E-8C JSTARS.
Gary Ward was scheduled to appear
in his MX2 but unfortunately encountered mechanical problems
while flying to the show. Skip Stewart pinched in and amazed the
crowd with his spectacular high-energy style of flying. If you
have not had the opportunity to see Skip fly, you owe it to
yourself to seek out a show where he is performing.
The Aeroshell Team flew a three
ship performance with Bryan Regan (formerly of the Red Baron
team) flying the #1 aircraft. The team demonstrated the exciting
blend of skill and precision that has made their performance a
fan favorite.
I want to offer my thanks to
Travis Reynolds, who did an outstanding job of providing the
media with great access before, during, and after the show. This
is the first time I have attended the North Georgia
Transportation Expo and I look forward to next year’s event.
